Meet Dr. Van Voolen

Welcome to my therapy practice. I believe that the match between a therapist and a patient is an important variable in the effectiveness of therapy and so I invite you to drop in and get acquainted as you consider what kind of provider might be a good fit for you or your family.

I am aware that the decision to pursue therapy can be anxiety-producing and that patients have varying levels of experience and comfort with therapy. It is not easy to raise concerns in front of another and even though I have been doing this work for over 20 years, I am always amazed and inspired by the courage I have witnessed as patients tackle painful issues. I have been equally awed and humbled by the power of a safe and positive therapeutic alliance to transform difficulties into opportunities for growth.

Treatments provided:
individual therapy
family therapy

Populations served:
college students

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”

- Albert Einstein

My approach is to work with patients where they are currently, and gently act as their guide to help them: manage emotional distress, strengthen their ability to cope with current and future challenges, and achieve personal, relationship, and professional life goals.

Having received training in various schools of therapy, I can pull from different perspectives to individualize treatment, often integrating a psychodynamic perspective with cognitive-behavioral tools.  This means that while I address underlying historical patterns that keep people stuck, I also offer concrete strategies that patients can take away from their sessions. I bring my personal commitment to wellness to my work with an eye to strengths and the ultimate goal of helping patients help themselves.

Common conditions addressed:
stress management
relationship difficulties
women’s issues
young adult issues
autism spectrum disorders

With the many competing priorities for our time and energy, I have tremendous respect when people prioritize emotional health.  If you wish to make an appointment, please call (315) 415-0157.
